♡ Savour the world

Julie Kruger Art @ Etsy

If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy.  If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem.

But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to savor the world.

This makes it hard to plan the day.

E.B. White in a 1969 New York Times interview

What if we stop having a ball?

What if the paint chips from the wall?

What if there’s always cups in the sink?

What if I’m not what you think I am?

What if I fall further than you?

What if you dream of somebody new?

What if I never let you win?  Chase you with a rolling pin?

Well, what if I do?

I am giving up on making passes and

I am giving up on half empty glasses and

I am giving up on greener grasses

I am giving up

What if our baby comes home after nine?

What if your eyes close before mine?

What if you lose yourself sometimes?

Then I’ll be the one to find you

Safe in my heart

I am giving up on making passes and

I am giving up on half empty glasses and

I am giving up on greener grasses

I am giving up

for you…

Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage.

Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love.

The Journey

One day you finally knew

what you had to do, and began,

though the voices around you

kept shouting

their bad advice –

though the whole house

began to tremble

and you felt the old tug

at your ankles.

“Mend my life!” each voice cried.

But you didn’t stop.

You knew what you had to do,

though the wind pried

with its stiff fingers

at the very foundations – though their melancholy

was terrible.

It was already late

enough, and a wild night,

and the road full of fallen

branches and stones.

But little by little,

as you left their voices behind,

the stars began to burn

through the sheets of clouds,

and there was a new voice,

which you slowly

recognized as your own,

that kept you company

as you strode deeper and deeper

into the world,

determined to do

the only thing you could do – determined to save

the only life you could save.

Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary.

What we need is to love without getting tired.

He was the only person in the universe who could deploy his wayward intuition to enter my world.  We were tied to the tip of the same nerve.

Falling in love.

Laughing so hard your face hurts.

A hot shower.

No lines at the supermarket.

A special glance.

Getting mail.

Taking a drive on a pretty road.

Hearing your favorite song on the radio.

Lying in bed listening to the rain outside.

Hot towels out of the dryer.

Finding the sweater you want is on sale for half price.

A long distance phone call.

A bubble bath.

A good conversation.

The beach.

Finding a $20 bill in your coat from last winter.

Laughing at yourself.

Midnight phone calls that last for hours.

Running through sprinklers.

Accidentally overhearing someone say something nice about you.

Waking up and realizing you still have a few hours left to sleep.

That first kiss.

Playing with a new puppy.

Sweet dreams.

Hot chocolate.

Swinging on swings.

A care package.

Seeing smiles and hearing laughter from your friends.

Watching the sunrise.

Getting out of bed every morning and being grateful for another beautiful day.

Knowing that somebody misses you.

Getting a hug from someone you care about.

Knowing you’ve done the right thing, no matter what other people think.
