TINY GREEN APPLES
I love to munch on olives. But not all willy-nilly with any kind of olive. No way. I love Castelvetrano Olives to be exact. They are my absolute favorite olives in the world. Num, num.
They are so cute. Shaped like tiny green apples, Castelvetrano olives have a mild, buttery flavour that’s easy on the palate, unlike some other olives that have that sharp, distinct taste. While they have that briny-salty olive taste, they’re also a bit sweet too. Oh yes, and they are not all mooshy and soft, but crisp and juicy! So addictive.
You may find them at the olive-bar at Whole Foods, like I do. Or an Italian deli with a wide olive selection, like I do at Granville Island in Vancouver. I prefer them with the pit, because it retains their crispy-quality as they get a bit squishy when unpitted and floating in brine.
FROM SICILY, WITH LOVE
Apparently they are flown in from a little town in Sicily where instead of being called “Castelvetrano” olives, they’re called…okay, you’re going to have to imagine a true Italian pronouncing this (re: Sophia Loren, Monica Bellucci, whatever comes to mind): nocellara del belice. Damn. So beautiful.
So yes, when I’m craving the savory-salty, instead of munching on some crackers or empties like that, I reach for my Castelvetrano olives, all bursting with yumminess. I get to luxuriate in their little bits of Italian sunshine olive goodness. *delight*
